SHSAT Score Calculator is an independent educational resource. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by:

  • The New York City Department of Education (NYC DOE)
  • NYC Public Schools
  • The Specialized High Schools Admissions Test (SHSAT) administering body
  • MySchools NYC
  • Any of the eight specialized high schools that admit students via the SHSAT (Stuyvesant High School, Bronx High School of Science, Brooklyn Technical High School, Brooklyn Latin School, Staten Island Technical High School, High School of American Studies at Lehman College, High School for Math, Science and Engineering at City College, Queens High School for the Sciences at York College)

2. The Score Calculator Is an Estimate

The SHSAT score calculator on this Site produces estimated scaled and composite scores based on the raw scores you enter. These estimates are not official.

Why the calculator can only estimate

The exact raw-to-scaled score conversion formula used by the NYC DOE is proprietary and not publicly released. The DOE uses a process called test equating to adjust scaled scores based on the difficulty of each year's test form. Because this exact conversion is not public, no third-party calculator — including this one — can produce results that exactly match the official SHSAT scaled scores.

Our calculator uses publicly available information, including:

  • Approximate raw-to-scaled mappings inferred from publicly released DOE handbooks and historical data
  • General knowledge of the equating process used in standardized testing
  • Cutoff scores published by the NYC DOE

What this means for you

  • Your actual SHSAT scaled score may differ from our estimate. Differences of several points in either direction are normal.
  • Your composite score is an estimate. The composite score we generate is an approximation, not a prediction of your official result.
  • Admission predictions are approximate. Cutoff scores change every year based on applicant pool, test difficulty, and seat availability. Meeting or exceeding last year's cutoff does not guarantee admission this year. Falling below last year's cutoff does not guarantee non-admission.

3. Practice Tests Are Not Official Tests

The practice tests on the Site are designed to simulate the format and difficulty of the SHSAT for preparation purposes. They are:

  • Not official NYC DOE materials
  • Not predictive guarantees of your real SHSAT performance
  • Designed as practice tools, with original questions and passages written or commissioned by our editorial team

Performing well on our practice tests is encouraging, but it does not guarantee a particular score on the official SHSAT.

For official practice materials, refer to the NYC DOE's published Specialized High Schools Student Handbook and the released sample test items at schools.nyc.gov.

4. Cutoff Scores Are Historical Data

The cutoff scores displayed on this Site reflect data published by the NYC DOE for past admissions cycles. Cutoff scores:

  • Change every year, sometimes substantially
  • Are not announced in advance of the test
  • Cannot be used to guarantee admission even if your score meets or exceeds them

We update cutoff data within a reasonable time after the NYC DOE publishes new information. Always verify with the NYC DOE for the most current data.

5. No Guarantee of Admission

Nothing on this Site guarantees, predicts with certainty, or commits to any admissions outcome. SHSAT admissions are determined exclusively by the NYC DOE based on:

  • Your official SHSAT composite score
  • Your ranking of schools on your application
  • Available seats at each school
  • The composite scores and rankings of other applicants

The Site does not have access to, influence on, or authority over admissions decisions.

6. Educational Content Is for General Information

The educational content on the Site — including guides, articles, study plans, test-taking strategies, and explanations of the admissions process — is provided for general informational purposes only.

  • Content reflects our editorial team's research and the experience of contributors, particularly Elisa Ahmed (NYC DOE teacher, Education Editor).
  • Content is not a substitute for:

    • - Personalized academic advising from a qualified counselor

    - Test preparation tailored to your individual needs

    - Official guidance from your school, the NYC DOE, or licensed professionals

  • Do not endorse external sites simply because we link to them
  • Cannot guarantee that external links will remain functional over time

You access external sites at your own risk.

9. Advertising

The Site displays advertising through Google AdSense. Advertising:

  • Is provided by Google and its partners, not by us directly
  • Is not an endorsement by us of any advertised product, service, school, or organization
  • May be personalized or non-personalized depending on your location, consent preferences, and the page being viewed (non-personalized ads only on content directed to children)

We do not accept payment for editorial coverage or for adjusting the calculator's results.

10. Editorial Independence and Funding

The Site is operated independently. Editorial decisions about content (what to publish, how to publish it, what to recommend) are made by our editorial team based on accuracy and usefulness to families, not based on advertising revenue or commercial relationships.

The Site is funded by:

  • Decisions about how much or how to prepare
  • Decisions about retaking the test
  • Disappointment with actual SHSAT results that differ from estimates
  • Admissions outcomes (whether favorable or unfavorable)
