Common Questions
Before you send a message, check whether your question is already answered:
"My score on the calculator doesn't match my official SHSAT score."
The calculator produces estimates only. The official SHSAT scoring formula is proprietary to the NYC DOE and not publicly released. See our Methodology and Disclaimer for details. Your official score is the authoritative result.
"Are the cutoff scores on this site current?"
Yes, to the best of our knowledge. We update cutoff data within 48 hours of the NYC DOE publishing new figures. The "Last updated" date on our cutoff scores page tells you when that page was last reviewed. For absolute confirmation, always check the NYC DOE's official communications.
"Can I embed your calculator on my own site?"
For commercial use, embedding, or partnership inquiries, email [email protected]. We may add public embed support in the future; for now, partnerships are handled case-by-case.
"I found an error on the site. How do I report it?"
Email [email protected] with:
- The URL of the page
- A description of what's wrong
- A link to a source that confirms the correct information (if possible)
We take corrections seriously and respond within 1–2 business days. Pages corrected based on reader feedback are noted in our methodology changelog.
"Will you tutor my child?"
We don't currently offer tutoring or paid prep services. For test prep, we recommend:
- The free official NYC DOE Specialized High Schools Student Handbook (downloadable from schools.nyc.gov)
- Khan Academy's free SHSAT prep materials
- Your local NYC public library — many branches host free SHSAT prep workshops
- Your child's school counselor, who can often recommend local resources
For free SHSAT prep resources, see our guide to NYC library prep options or browse our full prep guides.
"I'm a teacher / librarian / community organization. Can we work together?"
Yes, and we'd love to. Email [email protected] with a brief description of what you're working on. We particularly welcome:
- NYC schools and after-school programs that want to point students to free resources
- NYC public libraries hosting SHSAT prep workshops
- Community organizations serving NYC families, especially in underserved neighborhoods
- Educators who want to contribute content or be a named reviewer

Response Time and Expectations
We are a small editorial team, not a large company. We respond to email personally, usually within the response times listed above. During major news events (test results release in March, registration window in September), response times may be longer.
We do not currently offer:
- Phone support
- Live chat
- Same-day response
- Test prep coaching via email
- Score appeals or admissions appeals — these must go through the NYC DOE directly
For Students Directly
If you're a student emailing us yourself, please:
- Cc a parent or guardian on the email (if you're under 18)
- Don't share private information like your full address, school ID, or any official NYC DOE communications
- Know that we're happy to answer general questions, but we won't review your specific application or scores
If you're struggling with test anxiety or mental health, please talk to a parent, school counselor, or trusted adult — and consider contacting:
- The 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline (call or text 988 in the US)
- Crisis Text Line (text HOME to 741741)
- Your school's counseling office
We aren't a substitute for professional support.
Thank you for using SHSAT Score Calculator. We read every message.
